- ➤ Jackie Carrera, president and CEO of the Santa Barbara Foundation, and Ashley Costa, executive director of the Lompoc Valley Community Healthcare Organization, will be honored at the 2026 LEAP Awards along with Das Williams, who will receive the Distinguished Alumnus recognition. The awards will be held in person on Saturday, February 28 at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort—celebrating LEAP’s 55th anniversary with community leaders. Edhat
- ➤ Santa Barbara City Parks and Recreation, SBPAL and the Santa Barbara Youth Council will host a free Trunk or Treat event on October 30 from 5pm to 7:30pm at Spencer Adams Parking Lot (1235 Chapala Street) where families can wear costumes, collect candy and vote for their favorite decorated trunk; no registration is required and participants should bring their own bag for candy. - ➤ Veterans attended the Santa Barbara County Veterans Stand Down on Saturday at Santa Maria Fairpark where over 400 received support with meals, medical care, grooming, and legal help—provided by local volunteers and service organizations. - ➤ SpaceX launched a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 28 Starlink satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base Saturday morning at 7:20 a.m.—the first-stage booster landed on a droneship moments later. - ➤ More than 30,000 hours of KEYT television archive footage spanning four decades is preserved at UCSB and available for streaming. - ➤ The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is featuring an exhibit with an autographed surfboard from the 2008 premiere of Bustin’ Down the Door that bears the signatures of five world champion surfers — including Cairns, Townend, Tomson, Bartholomew and Richards. - ➤ UCSB computer scientist Daniel Lokshtanov received an $800,000 award from the National Science Foundation to study tough computer problems using quasi-polynomial time algorithms. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Santa Barbara annexed its municipal airport using a rare method known as a Shoestring Annexation—linking the airport with the city by a narrow, 7-mile long strip that runs through ocean water. The move, which began in the 1950s to help the city collect taxes from airport businesses, faced legal challenges until a 1961 state law banned the tactic. Noozhawk

- ➤ Local health leaders at CenCal Health stressed that making sure everyone gets care keeps the community strong — rising federal cuts and more visits to emergency rooms have put pressure on low-income families in the area.
