COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County launched an emergency response as CalFresh benefits will be cut for over 55,000 residents beginning November 1 due to the federal shutdown—boosting food supplies by 10 to 15% and expanding programs for families, students, and older adults to help ensure meals when benefits end.   • United Way of Santa Barbara County held its 28th Annual Red Feather Ball on October 10th and raised over $400,000 to support programs in academic achievement, financial security, and community resiliency—fully benefiting local children and families.   • Opera Santa Barbara (OSB) will open its 32nd season with a production of Cavalleria Rusticana at the Lobero Theatre on Nov. 7 and Nov. 9.   • Eight educators were honored at the 12th annual A Salute to Teachers gala on October 25 at the Music Academy of the West as they were recognized for their strong commitment to students—Cox Communications and the Santa Barbara County Education Office hosted the event that featured tributes, children’s choir performances, and a dinner at the historic Marilyn Horne Main House.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • A substitute teacher at San Marcos High School read a racial slur during 1st period in Ms. Tia Hannah’s class, prompting a student complaint and immediate removal—administrators will decide next steps and provide support to those affected.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Jonata Middle School has been named a 2025 Educational Results Partnership Honor Roll School for high academic achievement and student success — one of 19 schools in Santa Barbara County recognized using three years of CAASPP data.   • TIME magazine released its Best Inventions list, featuring breakthroughs by UC faculty and alumni in aerospace, health, agriculture, and computing. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Comet Lemmon is now at its closest pass to Earth and will grow brighter over the next week; locals are advised to use binoculars in a dark spot about 45 minutes to an hour after sunset to view it—experts say the comet is about 55 million miles away and will not appear again for 1300 years.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A barge named Ocean Protector is anchored near Stearns Wharf to complete pump repairs on Santa Barbara’s desalination plant—crews will place 450 tons of rock around the pump platforms to reinforce them while work runs daily from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until late November at a cost of over $5 million.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The USDA ordered states to withhold SNAP benefits starting November 1—if the government shutdown continues—impacting more than 55,000 local residents who rely on CalFresh to buy food.   • The Oakland Soldiers announced the launch of their Central Coast franchise at a private event on October 19—attended by over 100 athletes and family members.
