COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara-based ShelterBox USA has joined Miss Daisy’s Consignment and Auction House’s program to benefit local charities — the program gives donors a tax write-off — and a wall-spanning painting of Joe’s Café by artist Brad Nack will be up for bidding until Dec. 7; a sculpted angel by LeRoy Almon is also available for sale.  Noozhawk
  • MOVE Santa Barbara County announced that Iluminando la Noche will run Nov. 3—7 and free rechargeable bike lights will be given to local cyclists while volunteers help install lights, direct bike traffic, and hold signs. Volunteers must arrive at 4:30 p.m. for setup before activities launch at 5 p.m. and wrap up by 6:30 p.m.  Noozhawk
  • The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is increasing its food stores by 10%—15% to prepare for more residents who will miss CalFresh benefits next month due to a federal shutdown. Director Laurel Alcantar said 55,000 SNAP users in the county rely on this support to feed their families.  Noozhawk

  • A comprehensive guide to Halloween events in Santa Barbara outlines local activities—from pumpkin patches and hayrides to trick-or-treat gatherings and ghost tours—running today through November 2, with events spanning nearby areas like Solvang and Montecito.   • Cristino's Bakery in Goleta is offering Pan de Muerto, a traditional sweet bread used to honor lost loved ones, for Día de Los Muertos until November 2. EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCSB students in Education+ offer free tutoring and homework help via Zoom to K-8 students in local schools. The program recruits about 40 undergraduates each quarter and will add weekly STEM, coding and Spanish classes to support underserved families.  Noozhawk
  • Today, hundreds of Santa Barbara City College students are attending a Transfer Fair where representatives from four-year schools from California and Colorado host pop-ups across the west campus.   • Today, SpaceX will launch its Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County between 1:06 and 5:06 p.m., aiming to send 28 Starlink satellites into orbit and land its booster on a droneship in the Pacific — launch noise may be heard from Santa Maria to Oxnard.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara County Public Health director Dr. Mouhanad Hammami announced at a small public gathering in Santa Maria that 7,000 undocumented patients will stay with their current clinics after pressure from advocates, labor unions and Attorney General Rob Bonta — the policy change will be official on November 18.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Sutter Health announced it will acquire Hayashida Physical Therapy—operating at 319 Anacapa Street in Santa Barbara and 271 N. Fairview Avenue in Goleta—which will join its Goleta office at 5385 Hollister Avenue to form a department that will serve 8,700 patients each year. Patients will continue with the same therapists and gain more resources for orthopedic and sports therapies.  Edhat

  • On Wednesday, Cate girls volleyball beat Santa Fe in a five-set match in Carpinteria by coming back from a 2-1 deficit—winning 25-23, 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 18-16—to earn a spot in the semifinals.
