  • Sheila Wiley begins her Wednesday work at Mission Rose Garden at 7 a.m. by deadheading the special Julia Child rose bed alongside nearly 30 volunteers who care for the garden’s 2,200 roses—city Parks & Recreation held a reception to honor their essential role in keeping the garden vibrant.  Noozhawk
  • On Halloween, business areas from Goleta to Carpinteria hosted safe trick or treat events where 500 to 1500 costumed visitors enjoyed free candy and creative decorations – a series of events that led to neighborhood trick or treat walks – with local shops joining the festivities.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • About 40 witches and a few warlocks gathered on Friday for a Halloween lunch at Andersen's Danish Bakery and Restaurant on State Street to revive a tradition that began over 20 years ago. Artist Patricia Chidlaw said longtime participants and new members—bringing modern twists to classic rituals—joined the celebration.  KEYT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UCSB held its annual Physics Nobel Celebration where two faculty—John Martinis and Michel Devoret—took the stage to explain their Nobel-winning research on the Josephson Junction that sparked advances in quantum computing. The event showed how long-term scientific work led to over 1,000 physics jobs and spurred new technology.  Edhat
  • On October 25, eight educators were honored at the 12th Annual A Salute to Teachers gala at the Music Academy of the West in Montecito—presented by the Santa Barbara County Education Office and Cox Communications—and more than 320 guests celebrated with dinner and dancing.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recreational Dungeness crab fishing opened November 1—except in northern California, where high domoic acid levels kept the fishery closed. The commercial season will be delayed to protect whales and sea turtles until a mid-December risk assessment reviews the conditions.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Newsom signed Assembly Bill 14 on October 11 to expand the Protecting Blue Whales and Blue Skies program statewide and help reduce shipping speeds to protect whales and lower emissions. Partners celebrated the law on October 14 at a Santa Barbara event — marking a step toward cleaner air and safer seas.  Edhat

  • Santa Barbara County Departments of Behavioral Wellness and County Health Department launched the NoSo November challenge to encourage residents to reduce social media use this month. The campaign aims to boost mental and physical health by promoting face-to-face interactions and outdoor activities (for example, walking or meeting a friend).  Edhat

  • Yesterday, the No.15 UCSB men's water polo team upset No.6 UC Davis with a 16—13 win on Saturday morning, keeping their bid for a Big West Championship first-round bye alive—Brock Zamanian led with four goals and three assists while goalkeeper Levi Lentin matched his career high with 17 saves.  Noozhawk
  • Bishop Diego lost 46-33 to Pacifica on Friday night at La Playa Stadium after the Tritons scored 27 points in the second half while the Cardinals, who finished 8-2, now await their first-round playoff opponent when the brackets are announced.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Eight UC Santa Barbara women soccer players received All-Big West honors on Saturday, tying a school record last reached in 2006. The team will face UC Irvine in the opening round of the Big West Championship today at 6 p.m. — no live stream is available.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara High girls volleyball lost in straight sets to Ontario Christian in the CIF-SS Div. 5 Semifinals on Saturday in Ontario — the team fell 18-25, 15-25, 18-25 and now awaits the CIF State Tournament bracket next week. Coach Kristin Hempy said the loss came as unforced errors added up and noted the team finished the match with a 19-15 record.  Noozhawk
  • Dos Pueblos flag football ended its season with a 20—0 loss to JSerra Catholic in the CIF-SS Div. 1 semifinals at Scott O’Leary Stadium on Saturday. The Chargers finished a 24—3 record while JSerra will advance to the finals next Saturday.  Noozhawk
  • All seven local high school girls tennis squads made the CIF-SS playoffs after strong seasons, earning spots in first-round matches. Dos Pueblos will play against Cate at 2 p.m. on Nov 5—while other teams face off in similar matchups.  Noozhawk
