  • Friendship Center’s Halloween Disco fundraiser drew nearly 120 guests on November 2nd for an evening of music, costumes, and support for dementia care for older adults in Santa Barbara County—helping raise funds to improve local care services.  Noozhawk
  • Local best friends Sadie Bush and Shae Fitzgerald launched Girls Running Late SB, a run club for teen girls aged 12 to 18 that meets every Tuesday for a 2-mile run to build safety and empowerment in the community. The founders plan to strengthen bonds and seek gear partnerships to boost safety—ensuring a supportive space for young runners.  Noozhawk

  • Campus Point at UCSB is a popular surf spot with a deep history that began with the Chumash people and later saw European explorers, with its name changing from Sismikiw to Pelican Point—each name marking a different era from native use to a WWII naval base.   • The Santa Barbara International Film Festival announced eight honorees for the 2026 Virtuosos Award—Jacob Elordi, Chase Infiniti, Amy Madigan, Wagner Moura, Renate Reinsve, Sydney Sweeney, Teyana Taylor and Jeremy Allen White will discuss their work during the festival on Sunday, February 8. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara City College has partnered with Mentavi Health to offer online ADHD evaluations that take 60-90 minutes and return results in five days — cutting long waits for academic accommodations. The service costs $189 and helps students access the support they need to succeed.  Edhat
  • UCSB student volunteers with Education+ now offer free tutoring and mentoring to K-8 public school children in Goleta, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria to help close opportunity gaps. The program provides homework help, enrichment sessions and specialty Zoom classes (including group coding and Spanish classes) and will add STEM education classes this winter.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials have revived plans to offer land-based access to six public beaches along an 8.5-mile stretch of the Gaviota Coast at Hollister Ranch. Public workshops will be held on Nov 12 in Buellton and on Nov 13 in Goleta, with a virtual session on Nov 17—input will guide the environmental review process led by state agencies.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness and CenCal Health are hosting community workshops to gather input on improving behavioral health services. Today, a workshop on Youth System of Care is held at Lompoc Public Library from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. — a second session on Housing Interventions is scheduled for November 18 at Santa Maria Public Library with refreshments and gift cards provided.  Edhat

  • On Wednesday, Nov. 5, the moon will appear 7% larger as it nears its closest point—about 221,726 miles away—and will rise near the eastern horizon at dusk, offering a unique view for local residents.   • The UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team will open their season today at the Thunderdome against Cal State Monterey Bay with tipoff at 6 p.m. Coach Renee Jimenez has added transfers Maddie Naro (Santa Clara) and Zoey Shaw (St. Bonaventure) plus freshmen Chuncey Anderson and Ava Rawlins to build a team that will contend for a Big West Championship.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Bishop Diego and San Marcos football teams are set to start their CIF-SS playoff runs on Friday. Bishop Diego, fresh off an 8-2 season and a second-place finish in the Marmonte League, will host San Jacinto at La Playa Field at 7 p.m.—while San Marcos, which clinched a playoff spot by finishing third in the Tri-County League, will travel to Pasadena to face South Pasadena in the Div. 11 playoffs.  Noozhawk
  • Cate girls volleyball advanced to the finals with a four-set win over the California Academy of Math and Science in Carson on Saturday—head coach Jordon Dyer said standout players led the victory. The Rams will face West Valley next Saturday at 5 p.m. in a championship game at an undetermined venue.  Noozhawk
  • The UCSB Women’s Soccer team secured a 1-0 win over UC Irvine on Sunday at Anteater Stadium — Emily Caughey scored in the second half and Maddie Buckley made key saves; they will face top-seeded CSUN on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Northridge.  Noozhawk
  • SBCC Football lost 56-39 to Citrus College on Saturday in Glendora when the Owls pulled ahead in the fourth quarter. The winless Vaqueros will face Santa Ana next Saturday at La Playa Field as they seek their first win of the season.  Noozhawk
