COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nonprofits in Santa Barbara County are stepping in to help up to 55,000 residents who may go without food because federal SNAP benefits have not been released this month. Organizations such as the Foodbank, Veggie Rescue, Route One Farmers Market and Organic Soup Kitchen provide fresh produce and meals—offering food and volunteer opportunities to local families in need.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Nicole Powers of Village Properties Real Estate is hosting a food drive — with a coffee meet-up for friendly conversation — at the Mission Rose Garden this Saturday, November 8 from 10-11 a.m. to collect nonperishable items for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Santa Barbara City firefighters rescued a cormorant entangled in fishing line at the top of a tree at Shoreline Park on Sunday—using an aerial ladder truck after residents called for help.  Edhat

  • The Folk Orchestra of Santa Barbara will celebrate Scottish music with special guests Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas—performing on November 7 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Isla Vista, on November 8 at Marjorie Luke Theatre, and on November 9 at St. Marks in Los Olivos.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • UC Santa Barbara’s Art, Design and Architecture Museum is hosting Big Bang Beat L.A., an exhibition that shows Environmental Communications’ 1970s photography documenting Los Angeles’ rapid growth and environmental stress—an effort that highlights the city’s dual legacy of creative resilience and ecological challenges. The show runs Sept. 13—Dec. 7 and features an immersive geodesic dome with projected slides and a 1970s soundtrack.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Last Saturday, the Blind Boys of Alabama gave a lively gospel show at Campbell Hall with guest Cory Henry adding a fresh twist—mixing classic gospel tunes with modern pop hits.   • Aly and AJ will close their tour with a performance on November 9 at The Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara—celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first album—and support Everytown for Gun Safety with live donation calls; the show also marks a homecoming as they settle locally.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara High will stage an adaptation of the 1980s film The Breakfast Club starting November 7th. Drama director Gioia Marchese said she modified the screenplay for live performance — student actors will rotate roles across shows running November 7th–9th and 13th–16th.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A 2.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Santa Barbara Island on November 4th at 6:25 p.m. — no injuries or damage were reported, and it followed a 3.2-magnitude quake on November 2nd earlier this week.  Edhat
  • Mel, a male white-handed gibbon from Texas, arrived at the Santa Barbara Zoo last week and will join Chanee under the Species Survival Plan—he is in quarantine while Chanee may visit him behind the scenes.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At Vandenberg Space Force Base, SpaceX launched 28 Starlink satellites while the military tested an unarmed nuclear missile, showing the system's reliability and range. The SpaceX launch on Halloween marked its 15th orbital mission this month—while the missile test on November 5 at 1:35 a.m. traveled over 4,200 miles.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • UCSB professor Michael Gurven wrote a new book called Seven Decades: How We Evolved to Live Longer that challenges our focus on youth and shows aging as a natural part of human evolution. His book explains that living longer helped our ancestors share food and knowledge—ideas that reveal how family and community played a key role in survival—while urging us to rethink aging.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Cate girls tennis won by a score of 13 to 5 on Wednesday over Dos Pueblos in Carpinteria and will host Whitney High on Friday at 2 p.m.—Santa Barbara High beat Laguna Blanca with a strong doubles performance at home while Bishop Diego defeated YULA 14 to 4 in Los Angeles, advancing all three local squads to round 2.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB defeated San Francisco State 98–67 in its season opener at the Thunderdome on Monday night as sophomore Zion Sensley scored 23 points and grabbed 14 rebounds — his performance helped the team secure a strong rebounding advantage — while freshman CJ Shaw added 20 points off the bench. The Gauchos will host San Jose State on Saturday at 1 p.m.  Santa Barbara Independent
