COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Rock Climbing Gym announced it will close on Nov.15 due to rising insurance costs, lingering COVID-19 impacts and competition from The Pad Climbing in Goleta — this 15-year site, where manager Wyatt Russ met his wife, will end its climbing season while staff plan transitions and donations of equipment to local schools. The closure marks a difficult shift for a hub that has long connected climbers in the area.  Noozhawk
  • The city of Goleta invites residents to attend a free Community Disaster Education class, Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the Goleta Community Center * the workshop will teach practical steps to prepare for disasters like wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and power outages by helping participants create emergency plans and build supply kits.  Noozhawk

  • Fresco Cafe reopened inside the Santa Barbara Public Market this summer — offering both its classic comfort food and new seasonal specials to local diners. The restaurant continues its long tradition with favorite dishes and fresh, locally sourced ingredients that support the community.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Xeni Tziouvaras will return to Santa Barbara for the Sounds and Stories of Greek Christmas benefit concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec 13 at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church (205 San Antonio Creek Road); the event, presented by AHEPA and Opera Santa Barbara, will help fund college scholarships and cultural programs.  Noozhawk
  • Lights Up! Theatre Company will present a colorful play, The Wizard of Oz, from Dec. 4-7 at Santa Barbara High School at 700 E (Anapamu St.). Performances are scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.  Noozhawk

  • Los Padres ForestWatch launched its Wine for Wilderness Passport fundraiser, uniting 24 sustainable wineries with nearby trails in Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument—passport holders get complimentary tastings and outdoor trail access for the 2026 calendar year.  Noozhawk
  • Explore Ecology will hold its monthly beach cleanup today at Arroyo Burro Beach, where volunteers meet at 10 a.m. at the Watershed Resource Center to sign in and pick up cleanup supplies until noon—participants will receive a coupon for a free cup of chowder from Santa Barbara Shellfish Co.  Noozhawk

  • The Housing Authority of Santa Barbara has started construction on the former Quality Inn at 3055 De La Vina St. to turn it into permanent supportive housing for 32 residents—these new studio units will include a manager unit, community and support spaces, and on-site services from New Beginnings Counseling Center to help residents move from temporary living to permanent homes.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday—Bishop Diego's playoff season ended when a failed two-point conversion in overtime led to a 30–29 loss to San Jacinto at La Playa Stadium. The dramatic contest featured several momentum shifts in its final moments.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Cate High School won the CIF-SS Division 7 girls volleyball championship after a 5-set battle that ended 17-15 in the final set, with the Rams edging out West Valley. Senior Oyin Opawumi led with 26 kills and 26 digs—marking the program's first title.  KEYT
  • UC Santa Barbara Men's Water Polo lost 22-13 to top-ranked USC as Brock Zamanian became the program's ninth-highest scorer and set a personal best with 57 goals this season. The Gauchos will host Cal State Fullerton for Senior Day (honoring nine graduating athletes) today at 12 noon at Santa Barbara High School as they aim for a no. 2 seed in the Big West Championship.  Noozhawk
  • Westmont Men's Soccer ended their season today with a 3-0 win over Dominican at Thorrington Field. The team honored seven seniors and goalkeeper Aiden Strickler made seven key saves — five in the first half — that kept Dominican scoreless until set-play goals secured the victory.  Noozhawk
  • No. 2 Santa Barbara City College's women's water polo team won a 15-5 game against Ventura College Friday at the Western State Conference tournament—May Guidoux scored 4 goals to boost the early lead. The Lady Vaqueros then played Cuesta on Saturday—aiming to secure their ninth straight championship.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB men's basketball beat San Jose State 85 to 74 on Saturday at the Thunderdome when junior forward Colin Smith scored a career-high 24 points by making 8 of 11 shots, 4 of 6 three-pointers, and all 4 free throws—helping secure the win. Coach Joe Pasternack said Smith feels 100% after recovering from injuries, and teammates Aidan Mahaney and Miro Little played key roles in the victory.  Noozhawk
