COMMUNITY NEWS

  • People Helping People hosted the Legacies of Hope dinner at the Inn at Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos to honor Luminary Award recipients—the Becky Barieau and Billy Wathen Family, Feed the Valley with Chef Daisy and Greg Ryan, and the Brady Family. Local artist Beau Armenta crafted unique copper sculptures that reflect each honoree’s contribution to the community.  Noozhawk
  • Alicia, once homeless at St. Vincent’s, now works as a peer support specialist thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Women’s Fund, which has helped 52 families secure permanent housing. She will be the keynote speaker on Saturday, Nov. 29 at Rosewood Miramar Beach—illustrating how strategic funding can reshape lives.  Noozhawk
  • Jackie Carrera, president of the Santa Barbara Foundation, and Ashley Costa, executive director of Lompoc Valley Community Healthcare, will be honoured along with Distinguished Alumnus Das Williams at the 2026 LEAP Awards on February 28th, 2026 at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort — an event celebrating 55 years of LEAP's service to local children and families. CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is hosting The Impressionist Revolution: Monet to Matisse from the Dallas Museum of Art along with Encore: 19th-Century Art through January 25th. The show highlights prized works by Monet, Matisse and others — a rare chance for art fans to see masterpieces — connecting visitors with historic French art.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • UCSB Library and Dust-to-Digital Foundation have partnered to upload over 5,000 rare songs from the Jazz Age and Great Depression to the Discography of American Historical Recordings database—thousands more will be added soon.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UC Santa Barbara professor Omar Saleh received a three-year NSF grant of $441,000 to study charged polymer mixtures that form tiny droplets which may help deliver drugs or serve as surgical glue—his lab, one of only 10 using magnetic tweezers for precise nanometer measurements, will also hire a PhD student and work with simulation expert Mark Stevens from Sandia National Laboratories.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Los Padres National Forest has tentatively scheduled prescribed burns at campgrounds, trailheads + fire stations from November through December to reduce wildfire risk. The burns will cover 1-10 acres daily and will proceed only when weather and air quality conditions favor safe smoke dispersion.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Executive Officer Mona Miyasato announced on November 7 that Deputy Fire Chief Garrett Huff has been chosen as the next fire chief for Santa Barbara County — the Board of Supervisors will ratify the appointment on November 18 and he will start on December 8 as Chief Mark Hartwig retires on December 7. Huff has served the department since 2005 and holds key roles in fire and emergency services.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Central Coast Tri-County Community Health Workers and Promotores Capacity Building Collaborative was honored with a 2025 ACAP Supporting the Safety Net Honorable Mention for helping underserved people access trusted health services—its members include Children and Family Resource Services, Family Service Agency, and the Center for Family Strengthening. The award highlights the collaborative's work in improving health education, Medi-Cal guidance, and community support across the region.  Noozhawk

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Whiskey x Leather in Montecito celebrated 10 years on Nov. 8 as owners Ariel Hujar and Zee Chew hosted an event with drinks, appetizers, and in-store gifts. They also held a raffle that raised over $141,000 for Isla Fay at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital—marking a milestone for the local business and its community ties.  Noozhawk

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Housing Authority of the City of Santa Barbara began converting the former Quality Inn at 3055 De La Vina St. on Nov 6 into an affordable housing project that will create 32 studio apartments and one onsite manager’s unit for extremely low-income residents—residents who will pay no more than 30 percent of their income through Section 8. The project, featuring Spanish Colonial-inspired architecture and community spaces while keeping much of the original structure, will be completed in mid-2026.  Noozhawk

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UCSB women’s basketball team won 89-49 against Seattle University on Sunday as Zoe Borter, Madison Naro, and Chauncey Andersen combined for 40 points — the team outshot its opponent and rebounded well to secure the win. They will return home to host Grand Canyons at 2 p.m. on Saturday.  Noozhawk
  • Mark Patton visited Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara a few weeks early for Veterans Day to honor two local veterans who taught him baseball—Philip Patton, a Navy veteran and former sports editor, and Coach Glenn, a volunteer mentor who served in the Army and later died.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB Men’s Soccer won 3-2 against UC Davis in the Big West tournament semifinals at Harder Stadium—earning a spot in a championship match against UC Irvine on Friday, November 14. The victory extended the team’s unbeaten streak to 13 games and set the stage for a critical postseason win.  Santa Barbara Independent
