COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Isla Vista community partners are hosting a week of volunteer events to clean streets, garden, and collect food donations from locals. The Neighborhood Cleanup on November 16 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s University Church will offer free lunch—volunteers of all ages are encouraged to join.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Santa Barbara honors Veterans Day with observances at the Cemetery, the airport and Elings Park as locals pay tribute to service and sacrifice. The ceremony at the Cemetery begins today at 11:00 a.m. and will feature military groups along with a flyover by The Condor Squadron.  Edhat

  • Owner Dennis Longaberger said Anchor Rose—the rooftop restaurant at 113 Harbor Way known for its harbor views and live entertainment—will close in late December due to high operating costs and financial strains; he noted that a partner's disapproval of live music events contributed to the decision.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Choral Society will feature the world premiere of a new composition by award-winning film and TV composer Julia Marie Newmann at Trinity Lutheran Church on December 14 at 3:00 p.m. The piece—set to lyrics by local poet Elizabeth Spies—was previewed at Lehmann Hall and promises an emotional exploration of winter’s beauty.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Santa Barbara schools are opening food pantries to help families affected by recent SNAP cuts, with Hope Unified School District leading the effort by stocking every campus with donated food. Students, teachers and community members help keep the shelves full and the program will remain as long as needed.  KEYT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, a new FAA order limits commercial space launches at Vandenberg to nighttime hours and may force SpaceX to postpone its Falcon 9 launch of the Transporter-15 Mission, which was set for 10:18 a.m. The rule permits launches only between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.—a change that could bring sonic booms to local residents.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hospice of Santa Barbara invites community members to join its 42nd Annual Light Up a Life ceremonies from December 6th to 14th in Montecito, Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, and Goleta to honor loved ones with memorial tree lightings, speakers, entertainment, and refreshments. The events are free and offer a virtual option to dedicate a star—providing a supportive space for remembrance—while programs begin 30 minutes after star sales and music.  Santa Barbara Independent

SPORTS NEWS

  • Alex Cyr from Toronto and Eleanor Baker from Ventura led the Santa Barbara Half Marathon on November 9 in cool coastal weather + over 7,000 runners took part. Cyr set a new record at 1:06:35 and Baker finished in 1:19:49 + the race raised over $60,000 for local youth programs.  Noozhawk
  • UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer fell to Cal Poly in the Big West Championship final on Sunday when an 89th-minute goal gave the Mustangs a 1-0 win, ending the Gauchos' season — the team finished 13-5-5 and tied the record for third-most wins in a season.  Noozhawk
  • UCSB Men’s Water Polo, ranked 10th, beat Cal State Fullerton 14 to 11 on Sunday after building a 9 to 2 lead at halftime — the win improved their record to 3 to 2 and set them up for a no. 2 seed with a first-round bye.   • Dos Pueblos water polo’s Lucas Neushul and Bishop Diego tennis’ Haley Hubbs led their teams to playoff wins last week and were named Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week at Monday’s SBART Press Luncheon—highlighting their key roles in local sports.  Noozhawk
  • Today, the Santa Barbara Golf Club honors active or retired veterans with a special tee time offer that provides a small range bucket and a club logo ball marker. On December 7, the club will host a Holiday Family Fun Day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. — featuring a bounce host, face painting, cookies and hot chocolate, a meet and greet with Santa, and a holiday-themed putting contest free for the community.  Noozhawk
