COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hundreds of people honored veterans at Santa Barbara Cemetery on Tuesday during a Veterans Day ceremony—organized by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1649 and the Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation. Keynote speakers Brig. Gen. Frederick Lopez and his grandson Ryan Marsh spoke about veterans' sacrifices while musicians performed and wreaths were presented—drawing a crowd of over 1,300.  Noozhawk
  • Hillside, a nonprofit serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Santa Barbara since 1945, held its 80th Anniversary Gala on November 11 that raised over $135,000—marking decades of dedicated service.  Noozhawk
  • The annual Goleta Holiday Parade will take place on December 6 on Hollister Avenue in Old Town Goleta, featuring marching bands, floats and lively performances along the route from Orange Avenue to Kinman Avenue (parade route details). Organized by the Greater Goleta Santa Barbara Lions Club and presented by Fuel Depot and the Elks Lodge, the event will support local sight and hearing programs and feature Grand Marshal James Marchiando riding his 1959 John Deere tractor (volunteer registration closes November 21).  Edhat
  • Crews are rebuilding Santa Barbara’s Dwight Murphy Park with a new all-accessible playground, sports field, sidewalks, and restrooms. The $32 million project is 25% complete now and will reopen in spring 2027—bringing revised parking and one-way traffic changes to ease congestion.  Noozhawk
  • Goleta will host its 3rd Annual Old Town Goleta Holiday Parade Window Decorating Contest for businesses along Hollister Avenue from Orange to Kinman avenues, inviting them to decorate storefront windows in time for the parade on Saturday, Dec.6 — entries will be reviewed during the parade and winners will receive a Fuel Depot gas card and car wash while all will be featured on the city's social media channels — adding a festive touch to the holiday season.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara adds a new restaurant on November 14 as Bistro Amasa opens at 1404 De La Vina Street inside the historic Upham Hotel + sister restaurant to Barbareño. Founders Julian Martinez and Jesse Gaddy plan to serve modern American fare including lunch, dinner, and cocktails in a relaxed bistro setting.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Friday night, BARBARA at Eos Lounge offers creative drag performances by local queens such as Linda, Aria Cummingtonite, and Jaundice Joplin, who launched the show from a UCSB drag club to provide a new queer night out; the event features themed acts, interactive tipping, and live music by DJ Quizo—organizers reinvest tip proceeds to improve future shows and foster an inclusive artistic space for Santa Barbara—audiences enjoy memorable costumes and unexpected acts.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • UCSB Library partnered with the Dust-to-Digital Foundation to release thousands of rare Jazz Age and Great Depression songs on the Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR) database. More than 5,000 songs are now available for free streaming as the digital archive grows to preserve America’s musical heritage.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • International Bird Rescue is treating over 120 oiled Western Grebes rescued from beaches since November 3— the birds are stabilized in Goleta before being sent to San Pedro. Authorities including the U.S. Coast Guard and CDFW-OSPR are investigating the one-square-mile oil slick off the coast.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • A low-pressure system will bring heavy rain and a 10—20% chance of thunderstorms to Santa Barbara tonight, and dense fog will lower highway visibility, raising the risk of travel delays; the rain will end early Friday as cooler temperatures follow. Officials caution that localized flooding and burn area flash flooding may affect roads during the storm.  Edhat

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Dec. 2, the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness in partnership with CenCal Health will host a virtual workshop from 5:30-7:30 p.m. for community members to learn about current behavioral health programs and give feedback to shape future care (breakout sessions will cover work experience in recovery, youth system of care, or housing interventions).  Noozhawk
  • Ridley-Tree Cancer Center’s partnership with Sutter Health has boosted its local cancer services — recruiting 40 new clinicians and adding specialties like urogynecology and reconstructive surgery. The center now offers expanded clinical trials and advanced equipment — including twin linear accelerators that help ensure treatment continues without delay.  Noozhawk

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara Housing Authority began converting the old Quality Inn at 3055 De La Vina Street into affordable housing for very low-income residents who receive Section 8 rental aid. The project will have 32 studio apartments and a manager’s unit and is scheduled for completion in mid-2026.  Edhat
