COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, The Brasscals will debut their album Vierge with a live performance and fundraiser at Casa de la Raza, 601 East Montecito Street, from 7 to 10 p.m.—the event will feature deejay sets from DJ Turtle and DJ Rob and performances by S.B. Rollers and World Dance for Humanity, with a suggested donation of $15 to support community programs.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • A donation drive is happening at Santa Barbara Community Arts Workshop with donations accepted from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and held yesterday to help families facing food shortages and SNAP confusion amid recent federal raids—organized by Alex Ramirez with 805 UndocuFund, the drive asks for food, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and baby products while also supporting the Carpinteria Children’s Project.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Spero Renewables, a Goleta startup near UCSB, was selected by Shell’s GameChanger program to scale a process that turns plant waste into renewable fuels and natural vanilla flavoring.   • Tecolote Book Shop in Montecito will host award-winning author Kenneth Strange Jr.—a former FBI special agent and educator—for a book signing Saturday, Dec. 6, from 3–5 p.m. at 1470 E. Valley Road, where he will sign his travel adventure book It’s Your Camino and his true-crime memoir A Cop’s Son that earned IPPY and American Legacy Book Awards.  Noozhawk
  • Santa Barbara Arts Collaborative will host its sixth annual ‘Ready to Hang’ art show at CAW on November 22 from 4–9 p.m.—the free event will showcase local art that explores the theme of origins.   • Stellan Skarsgard received the Montecito Award at the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 11. He was honored for his noted performance in SENTIMENTAL VALUE (where he played a reclusive director trying to reconnect with his daughters).  Edhat

EDUCATION NEWS

  • United Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara County hosted its first annual College Career Expo at the Sal Rodriguez Clubhouse in Goleta during the last week of October. More than 50 teens met professionals from fields like healthcare, finance, aviation and public service—local leaders and business owners helped spark interest in future career paths, then the event turned into a Teen Night with games and music.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A storm drenched Santa Barbara County overnight and flash flood warnings were in effect for Solvang, Buellton, and Gaviota from midnight to 3 a.m.—some areas recorded over 3 inches of rain in 12 hours while authorities responded to multiple crashes on Highway 101 and Evans Avenue, with more rain expected today.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Housing Authority is converting a former Quality Inn at 3055 De la Vina St. into Spanish Colonial-style studio apartments with community rooms, laundry, and offices for 32 formerly homeless residents. The $18 million project is funded by the city, Santa Barbara Foundation, Banc of California and the state Homekey+ program, and residents will pay 30% of their income for rent as they move in by April.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Women Winemakers and Culinarians Foundation announced that its Pink Wines for the Pink Ribbon campaign raised $2,500 in September and October to support free care services at the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Santa Barbara. Local winemakers donated over seven dozen bottles of rosé wine—symbolizing hope—to help fund vital programs for women facing breast cancer.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Eight Santa Barbara runners competed in the TCS New York City Marathon on Nov. 2, earning their spots through a lottery win, charity efforts, or meeting qualifying standards.
