COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Friendship Center Adult Day Services improves life for adults with dementia and helps families with free programs like Memory Café sessions every first and third Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at The Louise Lowry Davis Center—founded in 1976 by caring locals, the center does not turn families away because they cannot pay.  Noozhawk
  • Community Partners in Caring has supported over 1,000 seniors and adults with disabilities in Santa Barbara County since 2019 by providing free door-to-door transportation and essential services. Founded in 1997 in Santa Maria, the nonprofit now depends on volunteers—who logged over 8,000 service hours last year—to help residents maintain their independence.  Noozhawk
  • The Vikings of Solvang will host their 45th Annual Needs Kids’ Christmas Party on Dec. 1st at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott in Buellton to celebrate over 1,000 special needs children and caregivers from Santa Barbara County—featuring holiday characters, live music, Santa Claus visits, teacher gift cards, and a tub of Olsen’s cookies for each child.  Noozhawk

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters stopped a coffee roaster fire at a mixed-use building on Robin Hill Road in Goleta this Wednesday — crews arrived at 8:57 a.m. and controlled the flames by 9:09 a.m. with no injuries reported.  KEYT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Christian Garvin, known as Garvin or Salmon, died in September and left a lasting mark on Santa Barbara through his winemaking and deep support of local artists (he also gave generously to charities). His efforts helped shape the Funk Zone into a vibrant community hub that will be remembered for its creative spirit and warm generosity.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will present a new exhibit, Where the Mountains Meet the Sea, featuring landscape paintings by 12 local artists that capture the region's coast and mountains from Jan 22 until March 29.   • Dos Pueblos descendant families have opposed the Northern Chumash Tribal Council’s plan to buy Dos Pueblos Ranch—home to old Chumash villages—saying the deal leaves many true family members out and benefits only a few. They say that without proof of true Chumash descent, the planned purchase is an unfair land grab—one that excludes many rightful heirs—and harms the community.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The Carsey-Wolf Center will host a free panel on independent movie theaters at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 22 at the Pollock Theater—filmmakers Jason Reitman and Brad Silberling will join other experts to discuss how theaters are changing with streaming.   • The Lobero Theatre Foundation preserves the historic Lobero Theatre—built in 1873—as a community hub for music, dance and theater while funding quality shows and outreach programs.   • Santa Barbara High School marked its 150th anniversary as it honored a rich legacy of academic excellence and enduring traditions—local alumni and officials recounted memories from historic challenges to modern successes that continue to shape the school's future.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Nearly 200 Hispanic students and families gathered at Westmont on Nov. 1st for the fourth annual event to learn how to apply for college and get help with financial aid. Superintendent Hilda Maldonado told her story of overcoming challenges and Westmont promised to cover most tuition costs for accepted students who get full financial aid.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Explore Ecology is asking Santa Barbara community members to nominate a student, educator, class or club for the 2026 Environmental Stewardship Award. Nominations close Jan 31 and winners will be celebrated at an awards luncheon on April 16 at the Cabrillo Pavilion — self-nominations are also welcome.  Noozhawk

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Caltrans crews are repairing storm damage on SR-192 today by removing a fallen tree, repairing pavement, and installing protective barriers near Stoddard Lane and Cold Spring Road—drivers face delays and a one-way traffic control near the SR-192/150 junction.  Edhat
  • Federal funding for permanent housing in Santa Barbara will drop from $3.42 million to $1.1 million starting next year, a change that could complicate efforts to house the homeless. The City Council approved a six-month contract with Mercy House Living to run the 100-bed PATH shelter—officials said detailed plans to purchase the facility are underway—adding a new step in local homeless care.  Santa Barbara Independent
