COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Santa Barbara’s Department of Sustainability and Resilience invites the community to its third annual Casa Abierta de Navidad Sostenibles on December 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 801 Garden Street, Suite 200—offering hot cider, chocolate, holiday snacks, caroling by the Madrigals of Santa Barbara High School, and hands-on art stations for making eco-friendly gifts.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • Last month, eleven hikers from the Humanist Society tackled a broken trail near Tangerine Falls where a 2017 fire and 2018 mudflow had removed most of the old path. The group used hiking poles to cross rocky stream beds and took different routes to reach the Homestead—Root Cellar and return safely.  Edhat
  • New Beginnings has provided low-cost counseling, shelter, and case management to Santa Barbara residents since the 1960s and recently hired staff that cut vehicle camps by 65% within a year—funded by government grants and donations. The nonprofit also held fall theater shows to raise funds for mental health and veteran support—demonstrating its ongoing commitment to serve those in need.  Noozhawk

  • The Santa Barbara Antique Show is now at the Earl Warren Showgrounds with over 60 dealers selling antiques from the 17th to mid-20th century — the event runs today through Sunday with free parking and multi-day admission for both collectors and first-time buyers, organized by Michael and Gae Ann McHale.  Edhat
  • Ensemble Theatre Company will celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday with a special performance of the West Coast premiere of The Complete Works of Jane Austen, Abridged on Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at The New Vic in Santa Barbara — a post-show birthday party will follow, inviting patrons in Regency or festive attire.  Noozhawk

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Irene Fredricey and her husband Jim Thomas are organizing a Giving Tuesday benefit concert to support music education in Santa Barbara public schools. The event will take place at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club on December 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. (local musicians and student performers will help fund the Keep the Beat program).  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On Wednesday, the UC Board of Regents voted 13-3 to renew its Tuition Stability Plan that lets tuition for new undergraduates rise by up to 5% each year starting in the next school year—students and some boardmembers worry the change will raise costs and lower the share of revenue for financial aid.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The UC Board of Regents approved the design, scope and budget for UCSB’s East Campus Student Housing Project that will add 1,688 beds — including 412 replacement and 1,276 new ones — on campus. Construction for the East Campus project will begin summer 2026 with a planned fall opening while work on the San Benito project, which started in spring 2025 and is 25% complete, is on track for fall occupancy.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Torrential rains drenched Southern California on Friday, Nov 21st, sparking flash flood warnings and mudslide risks from downtown Los Angeles to Mission Viejo—areas like Santa Barbara County and the Santa Ynez Mountains saw heavy rainfall nearing record totals. Residents experienced flooded streets and stranded vehicles as emergency services monitored the situation.  KSBY
  • The U.S. Department of the Interior released a draft offshore drilling plan that would open federal waters—including the Santa Barbara Channel—to new lease sales for the first time since 1984, a move environmental groups say puts coastal wildlife and local economies at risk. More than 100 lawmakers and local leaders have urged the administration to stop the plan as public comments begin on November 24th.  Edhat

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On November 21, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department switched from a High Fire Season level to a Winter Preparedness Level—lifting the ban on permit burning for valid permit holders. Permit burners must call the department before starting any burn—ensuring all safety rules and inspections are followed.  Noozhawk

HEALTH NEWS

  • Santa Barbara County’s Women Winemakers & Culinarians Foundation raised $2,500 during its Pink Wines for the Pink Ribbon campaign—donating more than seven dozen bottles of rosé—to support the Breast Cancer Resource Center during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which offers free counseling, wellness classes and support groups for women facing breast cancer.  Noozhawk

  • Santa Barbara restaurants will stay open on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, offering festive menus that range from harvest buffets to three-course meals with seasonal locally sourced dishes—giving residents an easy option to dine out instead of cooking at home.  Edhat
