COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montecito Bank and Trust awarded $1.2 million to local nonprofits during its 23rd Annual Community Dividends awards luncheon on November 24 — a pre-Thanksgiving event supporting groups for low to moderate income residents. More than 188 nonprofit leaders from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties gathered at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachside Resort to celebrate the bank's longstanding community support.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the Santa Barbara Farmers Market was busy as growers washed rain-soaked produce like lettuce, kale, spinach, broccoli, carrots and cauliflower for holiday meals—Tom Sheppard of Sheppard Farms brought 300 pounds of green beans to meet high demand.  KEYT
  • On Nov. 25, People Helping People held its annual Thanksgiving Food Distribution that served hundreds of vulnerable residents in the valley, with 66 volunteers including a fourth-grade class from Santa Ynez Valley Christian Academy organizing donated food. The event provided meals, groceries, and a turkey distribution to 175 households — helping seniors, working families, and others in need.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • A 39-foot, 30-year-old white fir donated by Consumer Fire Products was installed on Tuesday near the Arlington Theatre on State Street and trimmed by city and crane crews during a two-day trek from Oregon. The tree will be lit on Dec. 5 at a block party with music and activities and will remain until New Year's Day (the sustainable tree farm plants 10 trees for every one cut).  Noozhawk

  • SpaceX will launch its Transporter-15 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base today at 10:18 a.m. PT using the Falcon 9 rocket — residents in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties may hear a sonic boom if weather conditions allow.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Strings will hold its Winter Concert on December 13 at 4 pm at the Music Academy of the West. Over 70 young players have rehearsed for four months under Artistic Director Mary Beth Woodruff and will perform classical and holiday pieces—tickets cost $30 for adults and admission is free for children—with a surprise movie character appearance.  Santa Barbara Independent

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Providence School in Santa Barbara—serving the community for over 60 years—teaches students by combining academics with service and is raising funds for a new Middle and Upper School campus where they can learn leadership together. The school uses tuition, donations, and gifts to support classes and service projects locally and abroad.  Noozhawk

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Santa Barbara Botanic Garden will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026 as the nation’s first garden focused on native plants—hosting a Conservation Symposium on January 31 and a Centennial Beer Garden on March 14 to honor its long legacy of conservation and research.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Santa Barbara County Fire Department announced Captain Jonathan Ford’s retirement after 25 years of service—Ford expressed thanks for local support and noted he will watch his daughters play college water polo at USC and Stanford.  Edhat

  • A luxury coastal estate at 3213 Cliff Dr sold for $10.85 million on November 20. The rare three-bedroom home—originally built in 1971 and spanning nearly 2.8 acres—features ocean views, a pool and spa, and a detached studio on a private road.  Edhat

SPORTS NEWS

  • The UCSB men's basketball team beat Nobel University 84-49 at the Thunderdome on Monday night and improved to 4-2 as they prepare for the Resorts World Classic. Freshman C.J. Shaw scored 23 points while Santa Barbara High grad Luke Zuffelato scored his first college points — showing the team's depth after back-to-back losses.  Santa Barbara Independent
