COMMUNITY NEWS

  • ASAP Cats, a nonprofit founded in 1989, cares for over 1,300 cats a year by providing shelter, veterinary care, behavioral support and adoption services in Santa Barbara County. The group holds monthly adoption events & yard sales and a yearly gala to fundraise for expanding its Wellness Program and surgical capacity.  Noozhawk
  • Olive Crest, founded in 1973, runs the Hope Refuge Campus which offers round-the-clock, trauma-informed care for sex-trafficked girls aged 12 to 18 in Santa Barbara. The nonprofit plans campus renovations and a new transitional housing program to expand services—transforming a historic property once visited by President Reagan into a sanctuary of hope—while continuing its mission of healing and restoration.  Noozhawk
  • Tracy Hobson—once homeless—is helping the Public Defender’s Office gather sleeping bags, socks, jackets and other warm items at the Santa Barbara Courthouse through December 11 to support those on the streets.   • The Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 25 at 2:30 p.m. to mark Game Seeker’s move to 920 State Street, and the store will hold its Grand Opening on November 29 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.—featuring free admission, cafecito, and face painting by local partners.  Edhat

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Music Academy of the West, founded in 1946, offers fully funded summer programs, performance events, and educational experiences that open doors for classically trained musicians and diverse audiences in the community. It is primarily supported by philanthropic donations and will launch a new High School Intensive in 2026—expanding access to the arts while planning a full renovation of its Music Education Center.  Noozhawk
  • State Street Ballet returns to the Granada Theatre with its production of 'The Nutcracker' Dec. 19-21 — featuring live music by the Opera San Luis Obispo Orchestra and a cast that includes over 100 local academy students, 20 pre-professional trainees, and 20 international professionals.  Noozhawk
  • California's holiday season brings big news as Cambria's Christmas Market will open November 28 with local vendors, live music, and festive food and drinks—while Solvang's Julefest will kick off a month-long Danish-style parade and tree-lighting event. A Winna study ranked the markets fourth and tenth with 10,568 and 2,038 monthly searches—making California the only state with two top spots on this list.  Edhat

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Retired engineer Craig Smith warned that burning cheap fossil fuels kills over 8 million people yearly and heats the planet causing heat waves, wildfires, and rising sea levels. The Santa Barbara Board of Supervisors is moving to phase out oil production in our county—state and local officials have effectively blocked Sable Oil’s attempt to restart a 50-year-old pipeline.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • As families and friends plan Thanksgiving travel, the Goleta Police Department reminds everyone to buckle up every trip—seat belts are proven to protect against injuries—ensuring safe roads during the holiday rush.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • The City of Goleta was awarded a $64,429 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety on November 25th to fund bicycle and pedestrian safety programs (including bike rides, walking events, young rider training, helmet distribution, school sessions, and a standardized e-bike education program) that will run until September 2026.  Edhat
  • Santa Barbara’s tax report shows the city collected $7.4 million in Bradley-Burns, $8.1 million in Measure C and $3.9 million in Measure I for the quarter ended September 30 — with Bradley-Burns and Measure C coming in 8.4% and 7.2% below budget and Measure I 3.8% above. The city also recorded $3.3 million in Transient Occupancy Taxes in October, adding to $15.1 million year-to-date — mainly from hotels and short-term rentals.  Santa Barbara Independent

HEALTH NEWS

  • Researchers at UCSB used MRI to study gamers' brains and found that issues like anxiety, depression and trauma may lead to loss of control in gaming. The study says that simply limiting game time does not help—treatment must also address these underlying mental health challenges.  KEYT

  • Tara Jones Haaf founded Eat This, Shoot That! nearly 14 years ago to support local restaurants with food and photography tours in Santa Barbara.   • San Marcos High's basketball team overcame a 22—11 halftime deficit to beat Oak Park 47—46 in overtime Tuesday night at the Thunderhut. Aidan Conlan led the team with 14 points as the Royals rallied in the second half to secure the season opener victory.  Santa Barbara Independent
