COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association announced that key roads will be closed on December 5 for the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Block Party — loading and unloading begin at 10 a.m. with full closures from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. — and the celebration will run from 6 to 8 p.m. in front of the historic Arlington Theatre.  Edhat
  • Unity Shoppe and Anthony’s Christmas Trees have partnered for the holiday season to raise essential funds for year-round programs that support local families. Anthony’s opened on November 28 at the Earl Warren Showgrounds and will offer a dollar off tree purchases for each donated canned good and twenty dollars off for every new toy—donations that help provide meals and grocery trips until December 24.  Edhat
  • Ice in Paradise, a nonprofit founded in 2015, provided affordable ice-skating programs and celebrated 10 years of service in October while serving skaters, hockey players, and local school programs.   • After three delays, SpaceX launched its Falcon 9 rocket at 10:44 a.m. on Friday from Vandenberg Space Force Base carrying 140 payloads—including Umbra-11 from a Santa Barbara-based company—that will help transport diverse satellites into orbit.   • Local shoppers formed long lines last night for 6 a.m. store openings today—seeking holiday deals with discounts from 20 percent to 50 percent.   • Seven historic hotels in Santa Barbara, like Simpson House Inn, El Encanto and San Ysidro Ranch continue to welcome guests with modern amenities while keeping their vintage charm—preserving a rich legacy in architecture and celebrity history. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On November 27 at 3:10 p.m., a 3.2 earthquake hit near Santa Barbara with its center 16 km north of Santa Barbara Island and 5.4 km deep, and no damage or injuries were reported while the USGS urged residents who felt shaking to submit a report (advising them to follow safety precautions).  Edhat

  • The Downtown Santa Barbara Improvement Association released new cleanup statistics for its downtown beautification project begun in September — crews pressure washed blocks, removed graffiti, and picked up over 50,000 pounds of trash from State, Chapala and Anacapa streets. The project is making downtown safer and cleaner, and a dedicated hotline will soon be set up for service requests.  Edhat

  • Rising rents in Santa Barbara force longtime tenants to move as housing costs continue to climb rapidly. Advocates say rent stabilization can slow these fast increases (helping protect affordable housing) while current rates remain unchanged.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Local high schools dominated Channel League girls tennis this fall as Dos Pueblos' Mel Mayo and Santa Barbara High's Nicole Buist shared the singles MVP honor while San Marcos' Kate Selby and Tate Jaeger took the doubles title, and teams earned 25 All-League honors overall.  Noozhawk
  • Miro Little made 10 free throws on Friday, including two with three seconds left, to give UCSB a win with a score of 72 to 70 over Lehigh at the Resorts World Classic—his perfect free throw record helped secure the victory.
