- ➤ The annual Milpas Street Parade set for December 13 has been canceled by organizers—who cited fears over immigration enforcement as the reason—and will not take place this year. Santa Barbara Independent

- ➤ For its 20th anniversary, UCSB Reads has selected Michelle Zauner’s 'Crying in H Mart' as the common book for 2026 — the program will begin in January with a student book giveaway and span free events that explore the book’s themes, culminating with Zauner’s public talk at UCSB Campbell Hall on May 7. - ➤ The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County announced December 1 that Rancho Dos Alamos—a 587-acre property in the Solomon Hills—has been permanently conserved as part of a network linking over 2,800 acres of protected rangeland; the effort was accomplished in partnership with local landowners Jimmy and Lindsey Dominguez and Steve Lyons to strengthen ecological connectivity in the region. - ➤ The National Weather Service issued a beach hazard warning for Santa Barbara County beaches, Malibu, and Los Angeles due to high surf, rip currents, and minor tidal overflows through Saturday morning. - ➤ UCSB researchers led by microbial oceanographer Alyson Santoro and colleague Barbara Bayer have found that heterotrophic microbes may fix more carbon in deep ocean waters than previously thought—challenging the idea that ammonia oxidizers are the main drivers. - ➤ A trio of former Santa Barbara County football players—Righetti High alumni Matthew and Lucas Graack and Santa Ynez High's Dallas DeForest—competed in the 45th annual Secretaries Cup at Fenway Park in November and helped the United States Merchant Marine Academy win 39-38 over the Coast Guard Academy.
