- ➤ Santa Barbara Home Improvement Center completed a 33-day round-up drive that raised $10,000 for Hospice of Santa Barbara, which offers free hospice services. About 20,000 customers rounded up their purchases or donated extra funds to support local care. Noozhawk
- ➤ The American Scandinavian Foundation of Santa Barbara hosted a Christmas dinner and auction at Lions Park in Carpinteria on Dec. 6. The event featured a St. Lucia procession led by Alia Matthews, a lively Santa Claus visit (Paul Wright), and bids that raised funds for student scholarships. Noozhawk
- ➤ The Santa Barbara CHP is hosting its annual CHiPs for Kids toy drive and is asking residents to bring new, unwrapped toys to CHP offices or designated locations until Dec. 19; the donations will help local families in need. Noozhawk
- ➤ Last week, local leader Kim Cantin received ShelterBox USA’s 2025 Community Impact Award at the Montecito Club, where the benefit raised $800,000 to fund emergency shelter supplies for families displaced by disasters and conflict worldwide. Noozhawk

- ➤ International mezzo-soprano Xeni Tziouvaras will return home for a Greek Christmas benefit concert at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church on Saturday, Dec. 13 at 3 p.m. She will perform traditional carols and Byzantine hymns (with an oboist and flautist debuting new repertoire) for the local community. - ➤ Wisdom, a 75-year-old Laysan albatross banded in 1956, reminds us of nature's long lifespans when spotted near the Channel Islands. Rare winter visitors such as a hepatic tanager and a western warbling vireo will draw bird watchers to parks when the Christmas Bird Count takes place on Jan. 3. Santa Barbara Independent
- ➤ After more than 120 seabirds were rescued from a one-square-mile slick, six western grebes were released at Cabrillo Beach on Dec. 2 and 17 were freed by Dec. 4; volunteers cleaned the birds with warm water and dish soap (for those with injuries) as many continue to recover. - ➤ The Bellosguardo Foundation is seeking permits for guided tours and special events at the waterfront Clark Estate after planning commissioners toured the property Tuesday — they reviewed tour logistics and parking plans. The Planning Commission will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday at City Hall to review the proposal. Noozhawk

- ➤ Vitalant asks eligible donors to book December appointments to ensure enough blood for patients and offers a chance to win a $20,000 gift card. Donors can join local drives (for example, on Dec. 11 in Carpinteria) or donate at the Santa Barbara center on 1413 State St. Noozhawk
- ➤ Wonderfully Made, a faith-based nonprofit, launched a suicide prevention campaign to help teen girls overcome social media pressures and depression. Sounds and Stories of Greek Christmas
The program includes traditional Christmas music, rarely performed Byzantine hymns, and Greek holiday carols. Performing will be Opera Santa Barbara director Kostis Protopapas; Santa Barbara-born mezzo-soprano Xeni Tziouvaras who returns home from Florence, Italy for this festive holiday concert and acclaimed soprano Anastasia Malliaras who recently performed at the Granada Theater with the Santa Barbara Philharmonic.
