COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eastside neighbors have raised concerns about public safety as trash, weeds, and parked vehicles create unsafe conditions near the Downtown Club and local schools. City officials and community organizations are increasing law enforcement and outreach—efforts aimed at reducing vehicular encampments and protecting residents.  Santa Barbara Independent

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • David Obst—80 years old and from Santa Barbara—has released his new book Saving Ourselves from Big Car that explains how leaded gas caused serious health risks and environmental problems. The 300-page book—based on extensive research—shows that corporate greed drove the continued use of lead in fuel and underscores a public health challenge.  Santa Barbara Independent

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A state bill proposed on Monday would require the eight-story apartment project at 505 E. Los Olivos—located behind the Santa Barbara Mission and set to bring 270 apartments, including 54 affordable units—to complete an environmental review if passed. Developers claim local wealthy residents are trying to block the project and are mounting legal challenges.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • On Thursday, September 11 at 9:00 a.m., the Santa Barbara County Fire Department held a ceremony at all 16 stations—lowering the American flag to half-staff and observing a moment of silence to honor those lost on 9/11, including 343 firefighters and many civilians. The public was invited to join in remembrance as part of the department’s enduring tribute.  Santa Barbara Independent
  • County supervisors approved a $1.5 million loan to fund the Mission Hills affordable housing project near Lompoc with 49 units planned; the county loan at 3 percent interest over 20 years will help cover the $51.6 million cost—expenses rose with higher labor and material prices.  Santa Barbara Independent

  • Santa Barbara High boys water polo team claimed a 6-5 win over Cate on Thursday in Santa Barbara as they rallied from a 4-3 deficit with two fourth-quarter goals by Lorenzo Russell—solid defense kept the game low scoring throughout.  Noozhawk
  • The UC Santa Barbara Women’s Soccer team defeated the University of New Mexico 2-0 at Harder Stadium on Thursday evening—both goals came in the second half. With key saves from goalkeeper Maddie Buckley and strikes from Olivia Howard and Evelyn Arsenault, the win marked their fifth straight victory and improved their record to 6-1-1.  Noozhawk
  • On Thursday in Carpinteria, Cate girls tennis won a 9-0 non-league sweep of Santa Ynez High—11 players helped the Rams stay undefeated. Dos Pueblos then swept their Channel League opener against Rio Mesa, and Carpinteria beat Santa Paula 18-0 in the Citrus Coast League match.  Noozhawk
  • Yesterday, the No. 19 UCSB men's water polo team beat Whittier 23-10 with Billy Rankin scoring five goals before falling 15-14 in double overtime to No. 12 Pepperdine— the Gauchos now face a busy day as they play No. 4 Stanford at 12 noon and Cal Lutheran at 3 p.m. today.  Noozhawk
  • Westmont Women’s Soccer lost by a score of 4 to 1 to Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday afternoon at home after an early goal gave them hope but could not stop the Broncos from scoring a penalty and additional goals. Head coach Lauren Matthias said the team showed promise but must work on its defense and physical play — Westmont will host California Lutheran in an exhibition game on Saturday before traveling for its next match on September 20.  Noozhawk
  • Laguna Blanca girls volleyball defeated Foothill Tech in their Frontier League opener on Thursday in Ventura—Sage Holcombe led with 16 kills while Ginger Finney made 41 assists to spark the four-set win.  Noozhawk
  • Carpinteria High’s cross country team ran in the first Citrus Coast League cluster meet at Arroyo Verde Park on Thursday—girls finished third and boys finished fourth overall. Jaqueline Guadian finished in 22:08 while Mila Martins finished in 22:25 and Max Soto came in eighth—and the teams will run in the Ojai Invitational next weekend.  Noozhawk
  • On Thursday at the Thunderdome, UCSB’s volleyball team swept Kansas State in three sets with scores of 25—16, 25—23, 25—16. Milan Rex and freshman setter Ayva Ostovar led the attack—providing 20 and 22 assists respectively—as the Gauchos earned their first win over a Power—5 opponent.  Noozhawk
  • San Marcos girls flag football team dominated a Thursday game at Warkentin Stadium—shutting out Santa Barbara High 41—0. The Royals secured the win with strong defense and scoring consistency—and will host Ventura on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.  Noozhawk
