If you haven't voted yet, today's the day. About 88,000 ballots had been returned by Monday, 35% of the registered voters in Santa Barbara County, and more than 10,000 came in that day alone. Martin Cobos, the deputy registrar of voters, urges anyone still deciding to vote soon, given the ballot's length and possible wait times.

Voting today? Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Skip the mail: ballots mailed on Election Day may not be postmarked in time because of U.S. Postal Service processing changes. Use a drop box, a polling place or the Santa Barbara or Santa Maria elections office.

  • On the ballot: governor, a congressional seat, an Assembly seat
  • Also on the ballot: 14 state propositions and local measures
  • June primary: about 2,300 late ballots were rejected
  • Drop boxes: cleared and locked at 8 p.m.

Don't count on every close race being settled tonight. News Channel 3-12 says it's unlikely the tightest races are decided immediately, based on past elections, with thousands of ballots still to count.

Coast

Santa Barbara's sea level hit a record last week, and El Niño could bring more coastal flooding

If you spend time near the water, take note: sea levels hit all-time records last week in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, San Diego Bay and La Jolla. At the San Pedro gauge in L.A., the water reached 8.19 feet on Oct. 27, topping the 7.93-foot record from Jan. 10, 2005.

With building, last week's flooding came from a record-hot ocean combined with higher-than-normal tides, and powerful storms bringing big waves would add a third factor. Robbie Munroe, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Oxnard, said waters ran "a foot to a foot and a half above what we would normally expect." King tides are due around Thanksgiving, Christmas and Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Oct. 26, coastal flooding advisories also covered parts of Santa Barbara County.

  • Scripps Pier: 75.4 degrees Saturday, 11.1 above the Halloween average
  • Huntington Beach: 114 homes and structures damaged by seawater
  • Marin County: bayside flooding of up to 2 feet
